Kids Sport of Choice Becoming a Year Round Vocation
I read an interesting article in the Barrie Examiner today about a gent who was setting up a dry land training facility for hockey in the Barrie Ontario area. I find this interesting because I have thought for a while now that in order for kids today to remain competitive in the sport of their choice, be it hockey, lacrosse, soccer, golf, you get the drift. In order for them to keep that competitive edge, they have to train for that sport year round. Gone are the days when I was younger when you could play hockey in the winter and lacrosse in the summer. The conditioning is the same but the motor skills and timing are different. The competition is so high today and there are always 10 waiting to take your place, that these kids /young adults have to keep that edge and the only way is to practice all year long I still believe that children should have fun first that is what matters most. They should get some variety to see what they like but once they find their niche sport and want to excel in it when say they are about 14 or 15, then they have to keep that edge if they ever want to have a chance to move forward with it because the competition is so stiff. Sometimes the only difference is attitude and a willingness to learn. In some ways it is too bad that these adolescents have to eat and sleep their sport in order to have a chance to succeed. If you think I am wrong just ask an Olympic athletic contender what their daily life entails. "No Guts No Glory"
