Detroit Dominant
Dallas started the game strong and had three good chances early in the game but came up empty. Those missed opportunities would come back to bit them in the ass. Then Detroit’s fourth line got a chance 6 minutes in and put it in the net. The shot deflected of a Dallas defenseman’s stick and into the top corner over Turco’s glove hand. Dallas tied the game up on the power play with just less than 10 minutes left in the 1st period. The wings scored again but it was waved off by the ref right away and called a hand pass. The ref’s let the boys play. The Star’s started the game with much more energy but by the half way point of the first period, Detroit had taken the game over. Detroit scored on the powder play in the second period and then just played keep away with the puck for the rest of the night. Dallas seemed to be chasing the wings all night and never quite catching them. The final score of 2-1 was flattering to Dallas, who was in reality Detroit’s whipping boy. It was men playing against boys out there. Dallas stayed in it and I was very surprised they did considering how badly they were outplayed. Detroit always started with the puck as they had a 71% success rate on face-offs. The question has to be asked after watching this game. The question is can Dallas win a game, never mind the series. Personally I think Dallas is done, having spent too much energy to get past San Jose, while Detroit had a relatively easy time with the injury depleted, Colorado squad. They say to have a chance at the cup you must have a least one easy series or your chances are not good. Pittsburgh has had a relatively easy time so far in the east too and that is one of the reasons why I am picking them to beat the flyers. It seems that Marty Turco has let old Joe Lewis arena get into his head. But that is not the only problem that Turco and his Dallas teammates face. You see a lot of the Dallas game consists of Turco playing the puck and helping his defense clear the zone. Detroit is keeping the puck away from Turco on shoot in’s or carrying it into their zone off the rush. The Dallas defense has not been able to adjust to this. Turco is also having problems getting comfortable because he has not been able to handle the puck, which is one of the ways that he builds confidence. So the sword has a double edge for Dallas and I think they are going to fall on it. The only way that Dallas will have a chance against Detroit is to get the puck deep on there defense and apply a strong fore-check to pressure that defense so they can’t make that first clearing pass up to their forward. Dallas has to find a way to stop that because once the forwards on Detroit have the puck with speed in the neutral zone, the stars will just be chasing them around and the puck will be in their net. Bottom line is Dallas is in DEEP trouble Sincerely Walt Webb
